The Best Roses for Fragrance — Our Top Picks
Share
Fragrance is at the heart of everything we do at Usk Valley Roses. It's the reason we fell in love with roses in the first place, and it's the quality we look for above almost anything else when choosing which varieties to grow. A rose that looks beautiful but smells of nothing is, to our minds, only half a rose.
So if you're looking for roses that will genuinely fill your garden with scent, here are our top picks — tried, tested, and grown right here in the Usk Valley.
'William Lobb' — The Classic Old Rose Scent

If you want to know what a rose is supposed to smell like, grow 'William Lobb'. This magnificent moss rose produces a powerful, classic old rose fragrance that is simply intoxicating — rich, deep, and unmistakably old-fashioned in the very best sense. The blooms shift from deep pink to sumptuous purple as they age, and the distinctive mossy sepals make it one of the most characterful roses you can grow. A true garden original.
'Rose de Rescht' — Rich and Intensely Fragrant

One of the most powerfully scented roses in our collection, 'Rose de Rescht' is a compact Portland rose with a rich, classic old rose fragrance that belies its modest size. Deep fuchsia-pink blooms packed with petals, repeat-flowering, and wonderfully unfussy — this is a rose that punches well above its weight in the fragrance department. Perfect for smaller gardens where you want maximum scent in minimum space.
'Jacques Cartier' — Strong Old Rose Fragrance

A Portland rose of real distinction, 'Jacques Cartier' produces beautifully quartered, soft pink blooms with a strong, classic old rose fragrance that is simply wonderful on a warm summer evening. It's compact, repeat-flowering, and remarkably healthy — one of those roses that asks very little and gives a great deal in return. A firm favourite with our customers, and with us.
'Sweet Parfum de Provence' — Rich, Old Rose Fragrance in a Modern Variety
Don't let the modern breeding fool you — 'Sweet Parfum de Provence' has the kind of rich, old rose fragrance you'd expect from a heritage variety, combined with all the repeat-flowering reliability of a contemporary rose. Large, full blooms in warm pink tones, strong disease resistance, and a scent that genuinely stops you in your tracks. A brilliant bridge between old and new.

'Just Joey' — Sweet, Classic Rose Fragrance

One of Britain's most beloved roses for very good reason, 'Just Joey' produces extraordinary large blooms in warm apricot and coppery orange tones with a sweet, classic rose fragrance that is absolutely delightful. Flowering continuously from June through September, it's a rose that combines old-fashioned charm with modern reliability. Wonderful for cutting and bringing indoors.
'A Whiter Shade of Pale' — Strong, Sweet Fragrance
The name alone is enough to make you want to grow it, but 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' more than lives up to its billing. Elegant, creamy white blooms with a strong, sweet fragrance make this a rose of real refinement — beautiful in a white garden, stunning as a cut flower, and wonderfully fragrant throughout the season. One of our most popular varieties, and it's easy to see why.

'Boule de Neige' — Strong, Sweet Old Rose

'Boule de Neige' — meaning 'snowball' — produces perfectly rounded, pure white blooms with a strong, sweet fragrance that is simply lovely. A Bourbon rose of great elegance, it's repeat-flowering and makes a beautiful addition to any garden where fragrance and refinement are the priority. The contrast between the dark green foliage and the pristine white blooms is particularly striking.
'Cornelia' — Rich and Sweet
A Hybrid Musk of great charm, 'Cornelia' produces clusters of small, rosette-shaped blooms in warm apricot-pink tones with a rich, sweet fragrance that carries beautifully on the air. It's a generous, arching shrub that flowers prolifically — one of those roses that seems to be permanently in bloom from June onwards. Wonderful as a specimen shrub or trained against a fence.
'Buff Beauty' — Sweetly Scented and Effortlessly Elegant

Another Hybrid Musk of real distinction, 'Buff Beauty' produces clusters of warm apricot-buff blooms with a sweet, tea-rose fragrance that is quietly captivating rather than overpowering. It's a big, generous shrub that looks wonderful tumbling over a wall or growing as a large specimen, and it flowers reliably from June through to autumn. A rose of great grace and character.
'Belle de Jour' — Strongly Fragrant and Award-Winning
Our Rose of the Year winner brings strong fragrance to the Floribunda category — which isn't always a given. Warm yellow clusters with a genuinely lovely scent, repeat-flowering from June to October, and at a very manageable 120cm it's one of the most versatile fragrant roses you can grow. A modern rose that doesn't compromise on the things that matter.
A Note on Fragrance
Rose fragrance varies considerably depending on the time of day, the temperature, and the weather — most roses are at their most fragrant on a warm, still morning or evening. Fragrance also varies between individual noses, so what smells powerfully to one person may seem subtle to another. If in doubt, we're always happy to advise on the most fragrant varieties for your particular situation — just get in touch.
